about

Toronto-based Carly Rhiannon’s debut EP The Cure To Growing Older is a loving tribute to emo/post-hardcore/whatever else you want to call it. Five songs from these occasionally maligned and often underrated genres (plus one original track) have been filtered through the lens of sweeping synth sounds and punchy beats. But it’s not a remix album — each song is a cover that’s been recreated from the ground up.

Self-recorded and released, the project is a 100% DIY affair. The EP draws on all aspects of Carly’s background — from her training in audio engineering (you’ll see her name in the credits of genre-busting duo Bonjay’s Gimme Gimme and Broughtupsy EPs) to her time spent on the marketing team at MapleMusic Recordings. Picking up her first instrument in middle school, winning a life-changing scholarship to study recording, and playing in a rock band that broke up after its first and only show when their drummer moved back to Winnipeg – these are the experiences that shaped The Cure To Growing Older.

There’s a woozy take on Thursday’s “Magnets Caught In A Metal Heart” and a minimalist version of Taking Back Sunday’s “Cute Without The ‘E’ (Cut From The Team)”, as well as reworkings of songs by Sunny Day Real Estate, Saves The Day and Fall Out Boy. With their undeniably catchy hooks and unblinkingly honest lyrics, these songs evoke nostalgia for bittersweet romances and life before the responsibilities of adulthood took hold.

But more importantly, they offer a new perspective on old favourites — and demonstrate that a great song transcends genre.
